TITANIUM VS STAINLESS STEEL

Titanium or stainless steel? What you are really buying.

Titanium or stainless steel: we compare the two honestly, so you know exactly what you are buying.

Titanium cutting boards are hugely popular. They promise a plastic-free board that is hygienic and lasts a lifetime. That is partly true, but not every "titanium cutting board" is actually made of titanium. On this page we compare titanium and stainless steel honestly, so you know what you are buying.

What is a titanium cutting board?

A genuine titanium cutting board is made from pure titanium or a titanium alloy. Many boards sold as "titanium" are in fact stainless steel with a titanium finish or a thin layer. Terms such as "titanium finish", "titanium coating" or "titanium stabilised" are a sign that the board is mostly steel. That is fine, as long as you are not paying the price of pure titanium for it.

The difference in brief

  • Material: titanium is a light metal; 304 stainless steel contains chromium and nickel, the same steel used in professional kitchens.
  • Weight: titanium is about 45% lighter than steel. A 39 x 28 cm stainless steel cutting board, such as the TitanChef Original, weighs 750 grams.
  • Hygiene: both are non-porous. Bacteria, odours and moisture do not soak into the surface and you cut without microplastics.
  • Knives: both are harder than wood or plastic. Your knives therefore blunt slightly faster; regular honing is enough.
  • Dishwasher: both are dishwasher safe.
  • Price: genuine titanium cutting boards are often two to three times more expensive. A TitanChef stainless steel board costs a fraction of that.

How to spot fake titanium

Check the weight. Titanium is much lighter than steel: if a "titanium" board feels just as heavy as a steel board of the same size, it is almost certainly steel. Also read the product description: if it only mentions a "titanium coating" or "finish", you are paying for a layer. An honest seller states the exact composition.

When to choose titanium and when to choose stainless steel?

Choose titanium if weight matters most to you, for example because you often lift or carry the board, and if you are willing to pay more for it. Choose stainless steel if you want a hygienic, plastic-free cutting board that sits firmly on the worktop, lasts for years and costs a fraction of the price. For most home cooks, titanium adds little compared with good stainless steel.

Frequently asked questions

Is a titanium cutting board better than stainless steel?

Not necessarily. Both are non-porous, hygienic and free from microplastics. Titanium is lighter; stainless steel is sturdy, more affordable and sits more stably on the worktop. For most kitchens the difference in daily use is small.

Are titanium cutting boards really made of titanium?

Not always. Many boards sold as titanium are stainless steel with a titanium finish or coating. The weight and the exact composition in the product description usually give it away.

Will a titanium or stainless steel cutting board blunt my knives?

Both materials are harder than wood or plastic, so your knives wear slightly faster. With regular honing you will hardly notice it in practice.

Can a titanium or stainless steel cutting board go in the dishwasher?

Yes. Both titanium and stainless steel are dishwasher safe, without warping or cracking the way wood can.

Do metal cutting boards release microplastics?

No. Titanium and stainless steel contain no plastic, so they release no microplastics into your food, unlike plastic cutting boards that scratch and shed particles over time.
